About the LIAA

In 1958, a small group of professional arborists established an association of individuals that they called the Long Island Arborists. Though small in number, they were big in ideas. These forefathers were actually decades ahead of their time; the original environmentalists, who realized the importance of trees and ornamental plantings in their everyday lives. Their goal was to promote better appreciation and care of shade trees and shrubs on Long Island. These early pioneers held round-table meetings, where concerned arborists shared information and learned from one another.

In 1988, the Long Island Arboricultural Association, Inc. became a not-for-profit, non-partisan, and non- political New York State corporation formed for educational and scientific purposes. In addition to the professional arborists who began the group, membership has increased to include students, educators, municipal workers, and other concerned individuals. Its goals have also expanded.

Today, the Long Island Arboricultural Association, Inc. strives to stimulate interest by teaching proper planting and preservation, educating the public, encouraging research for the adequate protection of trees and shrubs, and promoting the use of efficient and proper arboricultural methods. Our monthly meetings, workshops, twilight tours, and Arbor Day activities are designed to further educate those interested in learning about arboriculture. The association educates and informs the general population by disseminating information through local horticultural events and Cooperative Extension services.

The Long Island Arboricultural Association is a leader among dedicated groups trying to save the environment. Trees are an important part of our homes, provide screens against wind and noise, block out unsightly views, and provide a safe haven for birds and other wildlife.

Join the Long Island Arboricultural Association today and help us with our purpose of educating for better appreciation and care of trees and shrubs on Long Island.
